Overview
"At the core of my paintings is the search for a precision of focus on the formal properties of objects that have an everyday, almost unremarkable presence in our lives. This results in a familiar and nostalgic content, and for me a more intimate relationship with their representation" - Paul Stone.
In Paul Stone's paintings, the simplest domestic objects become subjects of extraordinary attention. A British still life artist based in South Yorkshire, Stone is recognised for his meticulously composed oil paintings of fruit, ceramics, glass and reflective metal, combining the discipline of classical realism with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone developed his artistic interests through the study of Art History, obtaining a degree from the University of Bolton before completing a Master's in Contemporary Fine Art Practice at Sheffield. He became a full-time painter in 2008, devoting his practice to the exploration of still life, a genre whose long artistic history continues to inform his work. Stone's earliest compositions grew from an appreciation of ordinary, often discarded possessions. His subsequent introduction of fruit and vegetables brought a new organic dimension to his paintings, while retaining his fascination with the quiet significance of everyday things. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of Dutch and Spanish still life painting, Stone approaches composition with exceptional sensitivity to balance, form and space. His restrained backgrounds and carefully directed light lend individual objects an almost theatrical presence. His painting process is equally considered. Preparing his own canvas boards and working through successive layers of oil paint, Stone gradually develops the tonal relationships that give his subjects their convincing physical presence. In 2010, Stone was named Still Life Artist of the Year by Artists & Illustrators magazine. Throughout his career, Stone has remained committed to the possibilities of still life painting, offering a contemporary continuation of a centuries-old tradition, revealing richness in the overlooked details of domestic life.

Sugar Plums BowlOil on Canvas30 x 40 cms / 11¾ x 15¾ inchesSigned 'STONE' (lower right)Description
Paul Stone’s Sugar Plums Bowl reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with the quiet poetry of everyday objects. Working within the tradition of classical still life, Stone draws inspiration from the great Spanish and Dutch painters, as well as from British artists such as William Nicholson, yet his work remains rooted in a distinctly personal sense of memory and domestic familiarity. Raised on the Suffolk coast and later trained in Art History and Contemporary Fine Art Practice, Stone has long been interested in the emotional resonance of ordinary things. His subjects are often modest household items or seasonal produce, chosen not for grandeur but for their ability to suggest atmosphere, routine and reflection. In this respect, his still lifes become less about display and more about contemplation. In Sugar Plums Bowl, the combination of fruit and metal vessel recalls the long history of still-life painting, while the rich tonal contrasts and carefully controlled light give the work a timeless, meditative quality.
