Overview
"At the core of my paintings is the search for a precision of focus on the formal properties of objects that have an everyday, almost unremarkable presence in our lives. This results in a familiar and nostalgic content, and for me a more intimate relationship with their representation" - Paul Stone.
In Paul Stone's paintings, the simplest domestic objects become subjects of extraordinary attention. A British still life artist based in South Yorkshire, Stone is recognised for his meticulously composed oil paintings of fruit, ceramics, glass and reflective metal, combining the discipline of classical realism with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone developed his artistic interests through the study of Art History, obtaining a degree from the University of Bolton before completing a Master's in Contemporary Fine Art Practice at Sheffield. He became a full-time painter in 2008, devoting his practice to the exploration of still life, a genre whose long artistic history continues to inform his work. Stone's earliest compositions grew from an appreciation of ordinary, often discarded possessions. His subsequent introduction of fruit and vegetables brought a new organic dimension to his paintings, while retaining his fascination with the quiet significance of everyday things. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of Dutch and Spanish still life painting, Stone approaches composition with exceptional sensitivity to balance, form and space. His restrained backgrounds and carefully directed light lend individual objects an almost theatrical presence. His painting process is equally considered. Preparing his own canvas boards and working through successive layers of oil paint, Stone gradually develops the tonal relationships that give his subjects their convincing physical presence. In 2010, Stone was named Still Life Artist of the Year by Artists & Illustrators magazine. Throughout his career, Stone has remained committed to the possibilities of still life painting, offering a contemporary continuation of a centuries-old tradition, revealing richness in the overlooked details of domestic life.

Paul Stone’s The Forager celebrates the abundance of the British countryside and the longstanding tradition of gathering seasonal produce. Bringing together freshly harvested apples and timeworn vessels, the painting evokes the familiar rituals of autumn and the enduring relationship between domestic life and the natural world. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone studied Art History and Contemporary Fine Art Practice in Sheffield before becoming a full-time painter in 2008. His artistic influences include the great Spanish and Dutch still-life painters, alongside British artist William Nicholson, whose understated compositions found significance in familiar domestic objects. Stone's own fascination with still life began with modest possessions collected from markets and charity shops, inspiring his continuing exploration of memory, nostalgia and the passage of time. In The Forager, the humble apple harvest becomes a celebration of rural tradition and seasonal abundance. The arrangement recalls seventeenth-century European still-life painting, where fruit and everyday vessels carried associations of prosperity, nature and transience. Through his considered use of light and classical realism, Stone encourages a renewed appreciation of the ordinary pleasures of life.
