Overview
"At the core of my paintings is the search for a precision of focus on the formal properties of objects that have an everyday, almost unremarkable presence in our lives. This results in a familiar and nostalgic content, and for me a more intimate relationship with their representation" - Paul Stone.
In Paul Stone's paintings, the simplest domestic objects become subjects of extraordinary attention. A British still life artist based in South Yorkshire, Stone is recognised for his meticulously composed oil paintings of fruit, ceramics, glass and reflective metal, combining the discipline of classical realism with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone developed his artistic interests through the study of Art History, obtaining a degree from the University of Bolton before completing a Master's in Contemporary Fine Art Practice at Sheffield. He became a full-time painter in 2008, devoting his practice to the exploration of still life, a genre whose long artistic history continues to inform his work. Stone's earliest compositions grew from an appreciation of ordinary, often discarded possessions. His subsequent introduction of fruit and vegetables brought a new organic dimension to his paintings, while retaining his fascination with the quiet significance of everyday things. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of Dutch and Spanish still life painting, Stone approaches composition with exceptional sensitivity to balance, form and space. His restrained backgrounds and carefully directed light lend individual objects an almost theatrical presence. His painting process is equally considered. Preparing his own canvas boards and working through successive layers of oil paint, Stone gradually develops the tonal relationships that give his subjects their convincing physical presence. In 2010, Stone was named Still Life Artist of the Year by Artists & Illustrators magazine. Throughout his career, Stone has remained committed to the possibilities of still life painting, offering a contemporary continuation of a centuries-old tradition, revealing richness in the overlooked details of domestic life.

Study of Fly Agaric MushroomOil on Canvasboard19 x 24 cms / 7½ x 9½ inchesSigned 'STONE' (lower right)Description
Paul Stone’s Study of Fly Agaric Mushroom brings an intriguing woodland subject into the longstanding tradition of European still-life painting. The fly agaric, commonly found beneath birch and pine trees, has occupied a fascinating place in British folklore for centuries. Its distinctive appearance has become synonymous with fairy tales and enchanted woodlands, despite its poisonous nature. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone studied Art History and Contemporary Fine Art Practice before becoming a full-time painter in 2008. Influenced by Spanish and Dutch still-life traditions, alongside British painter William Nicholson, he finds inspiration in overlooked objects and organic forms. His early paintings often featured second-hand possessions discovered in markets and charity shops, although natural specimens have since become equally important to his practice. In Study of Fly Agaric Mushroom, Stone transforms a familiar woodland fungus into a subject worthy of quiet contemplation. His carefully controlled lighting recalls the dramatic traditions of classical still-life painting, reflecting his own description of compositions as small theatrical stages.
