For nearly five decades, Gladwell & Patterson has maintained a close association with Shepherd's work, supporting both his artistic output and his wider commitment to conservation.

David Shepherd: A Brush with Nature presents a focused consideration of an artist whose work remains closely associated with both wildlife painting and conservation. Over the course of his career, Shepherd developed a sustained engagement with the animals of Africa, India and the Far East, informed by extended periods spent observing them within their natural environments. This direct experience shaped compositions in which elephants, big cats and other species are positioned with clarity against expansive landscapes, their scale and presence carefully articulated.

  • Shepherd's paintings are characterised by a structured approach to composition and a close attention to the conditions that define each setting, from the dust and heat of the savannah to the denser vegetation of forested terrain. Within these environments, the animals are given prominence, not only as subjects of study but as central elements within a wider ecological context.

For nearly five decades, Gladwell & Patterson has maintained a close association with Shepherd’s work, supporting both his artistic output and his wider commitment to conservation. This exhibition is presented in partnership with White Oak Conservation in Yulee, Florida, an organisation recognised for its scientific approach to the protection and breeding of endangered species, including rhinoceros, cheetah, antelope and okapi.

  • Shepherd’s own reflections on his practice underscore this connection between art and advocacy, as he sought to use painting as a means of drawing attention to the animals he depicted. A Brush with Nature brings together these strands, offering a view of a body of work shaped by observation, experience and a sustained commitment to the natural world.
