As we move through life, we encounter works of art that hold our attention and invite closer reflection. Each carries with it a history, shaped by its making and by the many contexts in which it has been seen, allowing us to engage, however briefly, with the course of its journey.
Journeys brings together a considered selection of works at Gladwell & Patterson, tracing the many paths a work of art may take from its inception to its place within a collection. Spanning Post-Impressionist masters such as Gustave Loiseau and Henri Le Sidaner through to leading contemporary painters, the exhibition presents paintings and sculptures that reflect both artistic development and the wider histories that shape their movement through time.

Each work begins with the artist, formed through process, observation and material decisions, before entering a broader narrative beyond the studio. From early ownership to subsequent custodians, these objects pass through varied settings—private houses, formal interiors, and public spaces—bearing quiet witness to the events that unfold around them. Their presence intersects with moments of significance, from personal milestones to wider historical change, accumulating layers of context as they move between generations and across borders.
The exhibition considers not only the journey of the object, but also the role of the viewer. Works of art often become markers within individual experience, associated with particular places, relationships or points in time. They invite shared engagement, creating points of connection between individuals through observation and discussion.
