Description
Set against a flat ground of pale green, a single mackerel is arranged horizontally across the picture plane, its silvery body described with short, deliberate strokes of blue, grey and black that capture the distinctive patterning along the dorsal line. The fish is presented without surrounding objects or setting, allowing attention to rest on its form, surface and subtle shifts of colour, from the cooler tones of the flank to the warmer accents around the gill. In Split Pea Mackerel, Olivia Tuck returns to the still-life tradition that has become central to her practice, focusing on everyday subjects drawn from the kitchen and garden.
