    Private art advisory for
    the considered collector.

For more than two and a half centuries, Gladwell & Patterson has worked alongside private collectors to shape, refine and steward significant art collections.

    How we work

Our advisory practice has developed over generations in response to the evolving needs of private collectors. We do not offer a fixed package or a formulaic process. Instead, we take time to understand each client's tastes, ambitions and circumstances, and we build a working relationship from there. Through a long-established network of specialists, scholars, dealers and auction houses, we are able to identify and assess opportunities that are rarely visible through conventional channels. The art market in 2026 is increasingly international, increasingly competitive, and increasingly driven by private transactions; navigating it well requires relationships and experience that take decades to build. Discretion is fundamental to the way we work.

  • Our guidance spans the full life cycle of a collection, from the earliest stages of acquisition through to long-term management and eventual succession. We advise clients on purchasing and selling works of art, both at auction and through private negotiation, and can represent collectors discreetly in competitive bidding environments. Careful due diligence, authentication and attribution remain fundamental to our approach, ensuring that acquisitions are supported by sound scholarship and documentation.

Beyond acquisition and sale, we assist with valuation for both insurance and fair market purposes, collection management, and the development of long-term collecting strategies. We also work closely with legal, financial and conservation specialists to advise on estate planning, art finance and the integration of art within broader wealth management structures. For those interested in philanthropic engagement, we can assist with donations, institutional placements and the careful stewardship of works entering public collections.

Collecting art continues to attract a diverse range of motivations. For some, it represents intellectual curiosity and personal engagement with culture; for others, it forms part of a wider strategy of asset diversification and wealth preservation. Increasingly, collectors seek to combine these motivations, building collections that are both personally meaningful and thoughtfully structured over the long term. Our role is to help articulate and guide that vision.

The physical care and presentation of artworks also forms an integral part of our advisory work. Paintings have long been central to the gallery’s expertise, and maintaining their condition and display is essential to preserving both aesthetic and financial value. We therefore advise on conservation, framing, installation and lighting, working in collaboration with leading conservators, framers and technical specialists. Through these partnerships we ensure that each work, and each collection, is preserved and presented with the attention it deserves.

We work with individuals and families at every stage of their collecting journey, tailoring our approach to each client's needs and ambitions.

Can you help me find a specific work I am looking for?

Yes. If you have a particular artist, period or work in mind, we can draw on our network of dealers, specialists and auction contacts to locate it. Where a work comes to auction, we are also able to represent you in the bidding process, advising on value and acting discreetly on your behalf.

How do you charge for advisory services?

Our fee structure varies depending on the nature and scope of the engagement. We are happy to discuss this transparently at an initial conversation. Please use the contact form below to get in touch and a member of the team will respond promptly.

Do you advise on works outside your core specialisms?

Our deepest expertise lies in French Post-Impressionist painting and Modern British art. For works outside these areas we are able to draw on our wider network of specialists to direct you to the most appropriate expert.
