• Overview
"De Vree finds more and more inspiration in subjects from his immediate surroundings: sweets, bread, tools, etc. more often form the center of compositions"

Eric De Vree's still lifes are quietly arresting compositions. In each work, he conjures a sense of stillness and permanence, drawing the viewer's eye toward the grace of everyday objects: glistening grapes, antique glassware, a porcelain bowl, or a loaf of rustic bread. These familiar forms are rendered with extraordinary care, bathed in a gentle light that breathes life into the surface of things.

Born in Zandvliet, a village near Antwerp, De Vree received his earliest training in the studio of his father, Albert De Vree, an accomplished landscape painter and etcher. Under his father's disciplined guidance, Eric developed a classical foundation in drawing, colour, and composition. He went on to study the refined techniques of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly the painters of Leiden, and absorbed the dramatic chiaroscuro of Rembrandt, a legacy that would inform much of his mature work. The influence of the Old Masters is clear, yet De Vree's approach is never imitative. His palette is rich but restrained, the backgrounds dark and velvety, allowing light to gently model the contours of a bowl or trace the edge of a glass. Over time, his technique has become increasingly painterly-evolving from fine detail to a looser, more luminous touch, shaped by the atmospheric influences of Belgian Luminism and Impressionism. From 1999 to 2010, De Vree exhibited extensively with W. H. Patterson Ltd. in London, where his meticulously rendered still lifes were warmly received by collectors drawn to their classical sensibility and meditative presence. Though his work has expanded to include landscapes and portraiture, De Vree's still lifes remain at the heart of his practice. They are not mere exercises in technical skill, but contemplative studies in beauty, memory, and the passage of time. In his hands, the ordinary becomes radiant, and the transient moments of life are quietly held in oil and light.
