In Bénodet, Finistère, Pierre Plouhinec captures the gentle charm of this Breton harbour with loose, lively brushwork and a luminous palette. The reflections on the calm water and the crisp architecture of the town convey a vivid sense of place and atmosphere. A fine example of 20th-century French landscape painting, this work is ideal is a fresh, spirited depiction of Brittany’s timeless coastal beauty.

    • Pierre Plouhinec was a French painter whose oeuvre is closely associated with the landscapes and coastal scenes of Brittany, particularly the region surrounding his birthplace, Concarneau.

Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Quimper, Plouhinec developed a painterly language rooted in direct observation, characterised by a brisk handling of the brush and a keen sensitivity to the effects of light and atmosphere. Working predominantly en plein air, Plouhinec sought to capture the transience of the natural world with immediacy and economy. His compositions are marked by a harmonious balance between structure and spontaneity, revealing a nuanced understanding of both the natural environment and the built vernacular of Breton towns and villages. His palette, often brightened by the clear coastal light, nonetheless remains faithful to the tonal subtleties of his native landscape.
