Niek van der Plas’ De Kagerplassen is a luminous oil painting picturing the serene beauty of Dutch waterways. A leading contemporary artist, van der Plas employs an impressionist style, using vibrant brushwork and rich colour to bring movement and atmosphere to this idyllic sailing scene. The reflection of light on water, the billowing sails, and the tranquil shoreline make this an exceptional piece of maritime art.

    • Niek van der Plas (born 1954) was raised in Katwijk aan Zee, the eldest of four siblings. His hometown, a historic fishing village known for its white church, coastal scenery, and rolling dunes, serves as a frequent subject in his artwork. Encouraged by his father, he developed a passion for drawing from an early age. In 1966, he earned a nomination to study at the Famous Artist School in the United States.

Renowned for his vibrant use of color, Van der Plas favors warm tones that give his paintings a distinctive, French-inspired atmosphere. His work has gained recognition both in the Netherlands and internationally. Notably, his painting Canal Grande (Venice) was selected as part of the stage design for Joop van den Ende’s theater production Aspects of Love, alongside pieces by Vincent van Gogh and Maximilien Luce.
