Jacques Martin-Ferrières' Bateaux dans le Port avec la Capana, Collioure captures the beautiful Medieval commune as a seascape. The bright pigments perfectly capture the azure waters.
Jacques Martin-Ferrières is renowned for his charming and atmospheric landscape paintings. Son of painter, Henri Martin, he grew up surrounded by artistic influence.
Martin-Ferrières also took inspiration from his studies alongside Fréderic Cormon (1854-1924) and Ernest Laurent (1959-1929). His first exhibitions at the Salon in 1920 and 1923 were met with enthusiastic responses. In 1924, he received a grant for an artistic pilgrimage to Italy, painting iconic cities such as Venice, Florence, Rome, and Assisi. This journey ignited a lifelong passion for travel, leading him to explore various countries, including Spain, Greece, Croatia, Scotland, Holland, Germany, and Switzerland. Each summer, he painted the captivating scenes he encountered, while winters were devoted to refining his work in the studio. Flowers frequently caught his attention, whether from his garden—intentionally cultivated for future compositions—or gathered from local markets.
He became a familiar figure at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he went on to achieve hors-concours status. His talent was recognized with medals at the Salon in 1920 and 1923, along with a travel scholarship in 1924. In 1925, he received the esteemed Prix National for his work Le Peintre, later exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. His masterpiece Marche d’Assisi garnered the Gold Medal at the Paris Salon in 1928 and the Prix Legay-Lebrun from the Institut Français, with the piece eventually acquired by the City of Paris. In 1937, he further solidified his reputation by winning another Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle.
