The Gondolier is a cityscape painting of Venice by figurative artist, David Schock. The gondolier and his passenger calmly process through lagoon of Venice, otherwise known as the City of Water. Soft hues of terracotta characterise the skyline of the city. Schock painting passively depicts the Doge's Palace in the background as the figures approach the peninsula featuring the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute.
Born in Boston in 1962, David Schock would hone his craft on both sides of the Atlantic, gaining a degree in Massachusetts, studying in Exeter and then returning to work with New York’s Art Students League. Working with English painters like Michael Mayer, and American portraitists such as Aaron Shikler, his student travels have lent his paintings a diversity that is still apparent today.
