Constant Artz was a master in the processing of sun and light effects in his work and had a great sense of colour. His paintings, often quite small, stand out because of their friendly appearance and retain their popularity to this day. This delightful oil painting of ducks resting on the edge of the river bank with their ducklings captures the true nature of the animals.

    • Fascinated by nature from a young age, Constant Ludovic Artz made his name as a painter of idyllic scenes of ducks and waterfowl, scenes which were of great interest among the public in the nineteenth-century as an antidote to ever increasing urbanisation and industrial onslaught.

Born in Paris to Dutch parents, the Artz family returned to The Hague in 1874. At the age of twelve, Artz was enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. His father was a successful painter of the Hauge School and encouraged Artz to follow in his footsteps.

Artz was a master at depicting his subjects with a smooth, impressionistic touch. His paintings, often quite small, stand out because of their friendly appearance and retain their popularity to this day. His work can be found in both collections of many Dutch museums and in private collections worldwide.
