Anthony Theakston’s Praedari is a wonderful fusion of abstraction and naturalism, capturing the essence of avian grace with a strikingly modern sensibility. A leading contemporary British sculptor, Theakston is renowned for his ability to distil the spirit of birdlife into refined, almost architectural forms. In Praedari, the poised elegance of the predatory bird is rendered in a sleek, minimalist composition that speaks to both the fluidity and stillness of nature. This Modern British sculpture is an exquisite example of artwork stemming from ornithology.

    • Anthony Theakston is a distinguished British sculptor celebrated for his minimalist representations of avian forms, particularly owls. He studied ceramics at Bristol, followed by a Master of Arts in Ceramic Design from Cardiff in 1990. Post-graduation, Theakston has worked as a lecturer at Camberwell College of Arts and Falmouth School of Art while simultaneously establishing his career as a studio ceramicist.

Theakston's oeuvre is profoundly influenced by his fascination with birds and flight. He endeavours to distil the essence of avian forms, stripping away extraneous details to achieve a harmonious balance between curves and angular shapes. This reductionist approach results in sleek, expressive sculptures that encapsulate the intrinsic character of the birds.

Theakston begins with an extensive design phase, meticulously refining curves, lines, and expressions over several weeks. Once a design is finalised, he transfers it onto a solid block of plaster, carving the form with chisels, saws, and files. From this plaster model, he creates moulds for casting editions in ceramic or bronze. His transition to bronze casting in recent years has allowed for greater scalability in his work.

Theakston's sculptures are featured in numerous public collections, including The British Council Crafts Collection in London, The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
