Set within the grounds of the historic Royal Hospital Chelsea since 2010, what sets the show apart is the juxtaposition of art and design from all periods and origins. Masterpiece conjures London’s global reputation for elegance, tradition and the cutting edge; a unique international stage for visitors to discover and enjoy an extraordinary breadth of cultural experiences.

We are returning to Masterpiece London this summer for the third consecutive year. Set within custom made wall panelling by the renowned cabinetry designer Christopher Peacock an impressive selection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscapes will be on display.

Highlights include a magnificent painting of Le Bassin Aux Nymphéas by Claude Monet, painted between 1918 and 1920, a preeminent example of Monet’s late oeuvre. Begun shortly before the end of the First World War, Le Bassin Aux Nymphéas was part of a series of twenty canvases, of which only fourteen are known at varying stages of completion. This series of paintings forms a crucial part of the creative process of the Grandes Décorations: a concept envisioned by the artist as early as 1897 in which his paintings of the waterlily pond at his home in Giverny would form a large scale decorative ensemble. From 1914 to 1923 Monet painted over two-hundred canvases, culminating in twenty-two large monumental works of the waterlily pond now on display in the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris.

Claude Monet inspired a great many artists in his endeavor to capture the impression of the landscape and other influential works on display by the great Post-Impressionist painters Gustave Loiseau, Henry Moret and Henri Le Sidaner exemplify the Impressionist master’s influence on his contemporaries and on the generations of French artists that were to follow in his footsteps. Gladwell & Patterson has long championed the work of these artists, in particularly Georges Robin and Alexandre Jacob, who were discovered in the Paris Salon in the years following the Second World War by Herbert Fuller and have since been nurtured and collected by three generations of the Fuller family that own this prestigious London gallery.
