It’s been a wonderful year in our Rutland Gallery in the quintessentially English market town of Oakham. We’ve been busy meeting new clients in the area and welcoming old friends to share our love of this unspoilt part of the country. We feel ourselves to be fully integrated Raddlemen (the historic name for Rutland inhabitants) and wanted to share a little more about the region. Every day we’re lucky enough to drive to the gallery past glorious Rutland Water which sits at the heart of the county. In the morning the distracting tranquillity of it often reminds us of a Jacob painting. By the evening though, the light on our return journey is full of abstracted moody colours that could be straight from Kenneth Webb’s paintbrush.
Come and stay – we highly recommend Hambleton Hall Hotel which commands breath taking views over Rutland Water and is widely respected for its impeccable service, exquisitely luxurious bedrooms and Michelin starred dining. Be warned, rooms get booked up very far in advance.
Drive through and discover ..Our county’s pretty villages filled with honey coloured stone houses and quaint little pubs such as the Olive Branch at Clipsham.
Come and admire! The Georgian town of Stamford (technically in Lincolnshire) is only 20 minutes away with the Elizabethan gem of Burghley House. The famous Horse trials are held at the beginning of September each year and the house is open till the end of October. Uppingham another market town 15 minutes from Oakham, is filled with several rather lovely antique shops around its pretty market square.
Where to shop? Where else but our very own Mill Street in Oakham, filled as it is with interiors goodies, jewellery designers and clothes shops.
We’ll write again soon!
