Hamptons 2017: Reflections

The Hamptons is always one of the most highly anticipated trips of the year: beautifully deserted sand dunes and high manicured hedges hide jaw-dropping multi-million dollar properties right by the Atlantic Ocean; lobster rolls flow from every shop and restaurant; and, from 4th July until Labor Day weekend, Long Island comes alive as THE holiday destination for those on the East coast.

In amongst all this and more, Gladwell & Patterson make the Hamptons our home for a week as we present a lovingly curated show of our best pieces for the annual art show – this year as part of Art Market & Design in Bridgehampton.

Our collection highlighted Kenneth Webb, following on from our successful gallery exhibition in May/June, led by a stunning 1964 painting of Connemara, and featured pieces by Salvador Dalí, Karl Martens, Walter Dolphyn, Ronny Moortgat and Simon Gudgeon.

As the show predominantly champions contemporary art, we were inspired to see the birthplace of Abstract Expressionism on our doorstep and Emily & I took a morning to visit the home of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. Walking around the house, that has remained largely untouched, was impressive but nothing compared to the moment we stood, in our rather fetching blue slippers, on the paint-splattered floor of Pollock’s studio. The energy with which he worked could be keenly felt and each inch of the floor, a hint of his masterpieces. The space inspired reverence and we were so awed by the studio that we could have spent many more hours within.

Back to the show, and it was such a pleasure seeing clients from years past and reconnecting with them in person.  So much of our work is built on developing the close relationships we form with both clients and artists, some of whom we become lucky enough to call friends. We hope that we can return once again to enjoy the beautiful surrounds of the Hamptons next year.
