Description
An Afternoon Stroll captures a sunlit moment of rural leisure, as two women and a young boy cross a wooden bridge beneath overhanging trees. Dappled light plays across the figures and timber, while a small dog peering into the water below brings a sense of everyday animation to the scene. Set firmly in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, the figures’ dress and unhurried pace evoke an era shaped by simple pleasures and time spent outdoors. Blacklock’s fluid, impressionistic brushwork allows light and shadow to take precedence, with warm earth tones offset by cool greens and soft blues. Associated with the artist colonies of Walberswick and St Ives, Blacklock was deeply engaged with the effects of natural light and the rural landscape.
