Willem Dolphyn Belgian, 1935-2016
Dated 2003
Description
Painted from a subtly elevated viewpoint, Juicy Delights invites the eye to travel across the expanse of green cloth. A bowl of bright citrus sits slightly forward, their skins taut and luminous against the soft folds of fabric. Behind them rises an unusually shaped earthenware vessel, its faceted body and narrow neck carefully articulated, paired with a small blue cup whose muted glaze absorbs rather than reflects light. This raised perspective marks a departure from Dolphyn’s more customary eye-level arrangements. By looking down onto the table, Dolphyn allows the cloth itself to become an active element of the composition. The complex layering of folds, shadows and creases demonstrates a high degree of technical control, transforming a simple drape into a landscape of rhythm and weight.
