A dark, elongated ewer with a sharply pointed finial rises at the centre of A Taste of the Orient, its sinuous spout and handle setting up a strong verticality against the neutral ground. Around it, ripe figs sit in and spill from a turquoise-glazed bowl, their violet skins and pale green necks punctuating the arrangement with small, rounded forms. Such pairings reflect Dolphyn's fascination with objects drawn from. different cultural and historical contexts. Collecting metalwork, ceramics and glass throughout his life, Dolphyn often brought these pieces together intuitively, allowing contrasts of material and colour to drive the composition.
