Description
Summer’s Bounty is arranged on a narrow wooden shelf draped with a white cloth, its folds framing a shallow bowl filled with red cherries at the centre of the composition. Several fruits spill beyond the rim, their slender stems extending across the cloth and towards the edge. Dolphyn draws on long-standing still life traditions in his choice of objects. Cherries have appeared in European still life painting since the seventeenth century, valued for their brief season and glossy skins, which demand precise observation. The blue-and-white bowl reflects the legacy of tin-glazed earthenware influenced by imported porcelain, while the green glass introduces optical variation through its thickness and curvature.
