Description

Red Deer Stag, The Emperor of Exmoor is a bronze of a mature red deer stag standing on a two-part base. The animal is shown four-square and near full alert, its weight even on all four legs, the head raised and turned a little to one side, with a full head of branching antlers carrying numerous points sweeping up and back. The body is modelled in full, with the heavy neck, deep chest and muscled hindquarters of a stag in its prime, and the legs taper to small, precise hooves. Beneath the stag sits a thin rectangular bronze slab, and below that a larger, deeper rectangular block that raises the whole to eye level.

The red deer is Britain's largest surviving native wild land animal, and the population of the South West is the country's largest. The subject here is the animal the British press named the "Emperor of Exmoor", reported as one of the largest wild red deer stags in Britain, which was shot by an unknown hunter around the rutting season. Nick Bibby made the bronze as a memorial to that particular stag, working from photographs taken of the animal while it was alive, supplemented by measurements and reference drawn from other large red deer.
