Description

Rolling Pastures depicts a stretch of open grazing land beneath a broad evening sky. Two mature trees in full summer leaf stand at the left edge of the composition, painted in dark greens broken by flecks of paler yellow-green where light catches the outer foliage. Below and to the right, a flock of sheep grazes across the middle ground, described in small touches of cream, ochre and grey-brown with darker marks for heads and legs. The pasture falls away gently towards a line of low hills and hedgerows that recede into a soft blue-green distance. The upper half of the picture is given over to a sky of lilac, mauve and pale pink cloud, with a band of warm, light-toned colour along the horizon that reads as early or fading daylight. The surface carries thick, directional brushwork throughout. Foliage and grass are built from short, loaded strokes that hold visible ridges of paint, while the sky is worked in broader horizontal marks. Colour is set down in distinct, separate touches across both field and sky, so the forms hold together at viewing distance while remaining openly worked up close.

Georgina Potter is a contemporary British landscape painter based in Wiltshire who works predominantly en plein air in oils. She cites the British mid-century painters Alfred Munnings and Edward Seago among her influences. Her practice centres on the British countryside and its shifting weather and light, with finished landscapes such as this one developed from studies made directly outdoors. The subject of grazing sheep in an English pasture, set against open sky and a stand of trees, recurs across her body of work and places Rolling Pastures within her wider treatment of the rural British landscape.
