Summer by the River looks along a narrow watercourse that runs from the foreground into the middle distance, where it passes a low, pale-toned structure that reads as a bridge or wall before disappearing behind trees. The water sits in the lower centre of the composition, its surface carrying reflections of sky and overhanging foliage in strokes of white, pale blue and warm ochre. A large tree occupies the left of the picture, its trunk and main branches twisting upward, painted in dark browns lifted with touches of pink and pale ochre where light strikes the bark. Its canopy, together with the mass of trees and undergrowth along both banks, is worked in dense summer greens that move from near-black in shadow to bright yellow-green in the sunlit passages. Along the right-hand bank, warmer notes of pink, red and yellow run through the green, indicating summer growth at the water's edge. Above, the sky is blue, softened by white and blue-grey cloud towards the centre. Georgina Potter is a contemporary British landscape painter based in Wiltshire who works predominantly en plein air in oils. Her subjects are drawn largely from the countryside around her home, with river and woodland scenes recurring across her output, though she also paints on trips abroad.
