Description

Long Summer Evenings is built around low sun over grazing land. The light comes from behind a line of trees at the centre of the picture, spreading a warm apricot glow through the sky that cools to grey-blue and lilac towards the upper left and catches the outer foliage of a large tree at the upper right in russet and olive. The picture is organised around that light and the way it is carried in paint. The sky is worked wet-into-wet, its warm and cool passages drawn together without hard edges, so the glow behind the trees reads as continuous air. The treeline is left soft and feathered, a diffused band that sets the flock forward in the composition, while the sheep are modelled in cool violet and blue through the shaded wool and warmer touches along their sunlit backs.

Georgina Potter is a contemporary British landscape painter based in Wiltshire, working predominantly en plein air in oils. She draws her subjects largely from the countryside around her home, returning often to grazing livestock and the long, low light of a summer evening. Long Summer Evenings sits within that strand of her work, an English pasture held in the last warm hour of the day.
