Description

Over the River looks across a stretch of still water to a group of brick houses set back on the far bank, seen through a gap in the trees that line both sides of the river. Foliage in full summer leaf frames the view on the left and right, its greens carried down to the waterline, while the houses sit at the centre in warm pinks and browns, their gables and roofs partly screened by the bankside growth in front of them. The paint is worked thickly in separate, directional strokes. The foliage is built from loaded touches that keep their own edges, and the reflections are laid in with the same broken handling, so the water reads as moving light beneath the trees.

Georgina Potter is a contemporary British landscape painter who works instinctively from life, painting on smaller boards outdoors and developing larger versions in the studio, with each subject drawn from a specific place. Colour is central to how she works: she paints with a palette built up over years as an official Paint Ambassador for Cranfield Oils, pushing colour beyond what the eye strictly sees towards the mood of the British landscape rather than its exact appearance. She often works with her black Labrador, Wilbur, at her side on location. Over the River belongs to this body of work, a summer riverside scene of houses glimpsed across still water
