Jonathan Walker
Description
A Nip Before the Chase is a witty and wonderfully elegant character study that perfectly captures the artist’s playful reimagining of British country traditions. Standing with unmistakable swagger, this finely dressed fox pauses for a restorative drink before the day’s pursuits begin. Dressed in a striking scarlet hunting coat, polished riding boots, white breeches and towering black top hat adorned with a pheasant feather, the fox embodies the flamboyant rituals and pageantry of traditional countryside society. Yet Walker cleverly turns convention on its head: the fox, historically the hunted figure, now assumes the role of refined gentleman sportsman.
Jonathan Walker’s work is rooted in the landscapes and creatures of the British countryside, inspired by the hedgerows and woodlands surrounding his home in Devon. His anthropomorphic animals inhabit a curious parallel world where foxes, hares, badgers and moles adopt the manners and fashions of human society without ever losing their essential animal nature. Influenced by classic illustration traditions yet entirely his own in execution, Walker’s paintings combine narrative, satire and affection with remarkable technical freedom.
