Description
Stamford, River Welland shows the River Welland passing beneath Town Bridge, the principal stone crossing at the centre of Stamford, with its three arches reflected in the slow-moving water. The viewpoint is taken from the edge of the Meadows, a long-established riverside common, with the line of the bank and overhanging foliage guiding the eye towards the bridge. Historic limestone buildings rise beyond the river, their façades partially screened by trees. Terence Gilbert structures the composition to emphasise the relationship between river, architecture and open green space, elements that define Stamford’s townscape.
