Yvonne Canu French, 1921-2008
Description
Painted in Saint-Tropez, Les Vieux Gréements à St. Tropez depicts a crowded harbour lined with traditional sailing vessels, their masts threaded with signal flags and rigging. The boats sit close together at the quay, with figures moving along the waterfront and reflections broken into small, regular touches across the water’s surface. Yvonne Canu, who trained at the Académie Julian and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants, was closely associated with a late Neo-Impressionist approach, adapting pointillist technique to maritime and coastal subjects. During the mid-twentieth century, Saint-Tropez remained a working port as well as an artistic centre, and Canu’s repeated visits reflect her sustained interest in historic vessels and harbour life.
