Description
Painted during an exceptionally warm Austrian summer, Clarissa James’s Peacock Triptych carries within it not only a sense of opulence and stillness, but also an enchanting story of its own making. The triptych was created in the artist’s home studio outside Salzburg, a space crowned with south-facing skylights and perched halfway up a mountain, immersed in open countryside. In the height of summer, the only way to work was with every window and skylight thrown open to the air. Light poured in. Scents of blossom drifted through the studio. And with them came bees, repeatedly flying inside and settling upon the painted cherry blossoms on the two flanking panels. Drawn to the illusion of flowers, they searched for pollen among layers of oil paint. For James, this unexpected interaction felt like a rare and tender affirmation. Nature responding to its own reflection. Painting becoming momentarily indistinguishable from the living world. That memory lingers within the work. The poised peacock at the centre, the luxuriant blossoms, and balance across the three panels is completely harmonious. It is a triptych born not only of careful composition, but of a summer defined by light, warmth, and joy.
