Description
Alexandre Louis Jacob painted numerous views of the canals and marshlands of northern France during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, often working from direct observation in rural locations. Winter scenes such as Le Canal en Hiver form a recurring subject within his work, allowing the artist to record the muted colours and reflective surfaces of water and snow during the colder months. The subdued palette of greys, soft blues and warm earth tones reflects the seasonal atmosphere of the low-lying landscape through which these waterways pass.
