Description
The Battle of Camperdown presents a broad, frontal view of opposing battle lines advancing through smoke-filled water, the ships aligned across the picture plane with masts, yards and rigging interlocking in a dense maritime architecture. British and Dutch vessels are distinguished by their flags and hull ornament, while bursts of gun smoke drift laterally, partially obscuring the middle distance. Gardner’s handling combines fine linear drawing for rigging and hull detail with thin, translucent washes to describe atmosphere and distance. This scene depicts the Battle of Camperdown, fought on 11 October 1797 during the French Revolutionary Wars, when Admiral Adam Duncan secured a decisive victory over the Dutch fleet. Painted in 1988, The Battle of Camperdown reflects Derek Gardner's long-standing engagement with naval history and his meticulous research into ship types, formations and period detail.
