Description
A Noble Lady recalls the intimacy of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, particularly the small-scale character studies associated with artists such as Johannes Vermeer. Aris Raissis, a contemporary Greek painter trained in classical techniques, works in a manner that closely studies the methods of Old Master painting. The figure emerges from a dark ground through gradual transitions of light and colour, while the textures of fabric, skin and jewellery are constructed with layered glazes that reflect traditional studio practice.
