Description
Villefranche-sur-Mer presents a view across the harbour towards the clustered houses rising up the hillside of the Côte d’Azur town. In the foreground, small fishing boats are moored closely together in turquoise water, their masts forming vertical accents across the composition. A stone quay runs along the left side where figures walk beside the waterfront, while beyond it the facades of pastel-coloured buildings - cream, rose, blue and ochre - step upwards across the slope. Yvon Grac painted many scenes inspired by the coastal towns surrounding Nice, where he was born in 1945 and where he has long maintained his studio. Villefranche-sur-Mer, with its historic harbour and steeply rising streets, provides a recurring Mediterranean subject.
