Susan Ryder is one of Britain's most distinguished contemporary figurative painters, renowned for her portraiture, interiors and garden scenes. A member of both the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the New English Art Club, she has built a career creating works that are both technically accomplished and deeply evocative. Born in Windsor in 1944, Ryder studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, where she was encouraged by the influential painter Bernard Dunstan. Through him she discovered the work of artists such as Vermeer and Édouard Vuillard, whose sensitivity to light and intimate domestic settings would leave a lasting impression on her own artistic development. Although portraiture brought her early acclaim, Ryder's reputation soon extended far beyond it. By 1981, her standing as a portrait painter was such that HRH The Prince of Wales commissioned her to paint Diana, Princess of Wales in her wedding dress. The commission marked a pivotal moment in her career and was followed by decades of sustained artistic activity, including numerous prestigious portrait commissions and exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom. Her work is represented in both public and private collections, and she remains one of the most respected figures working within the British figurative tradition. Alongside her portrait practice, Ryder has become particularly celebrated for her paintings of interiors, gardens and architectural spaces. Whether depicting a drawing room illuminated by lamplight, a conservatory overflowing with flowers, or a sunlit terrace, her paintings reveal an instinctive ability to capture the character and atmosphere of a place. Everyday objects, furnishings and floral arrangements are observed with remarkable sensitivity, creating compositions that feel at once intimate and timeless.
