"Garden succeeds in mapping the landscapes of our dreams. He communicates directly to our subconscious, unhindered by rationality. His paintings invite a gut-wrenching sense of personal familiarity and recognition" - Beaux Arts, Bath.
Simon Garden is a British painter recognised for a distinctive visual language that combines vivid colour, textured surfaces and imaginative, often ambiguous scenes. Born in 1960, he studied at Exeter School of Art and Design, graduating with a First-Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1982. Following his studies, Garden established himself as a painter whose work resists easy classification, moving freely between landscape, figurative imagery and invented environments.
His compositions frequently present simplified houses, solitary figures, improbable pathways or monumental trees placed within expansive, dreamlike settings. Familiar elements of the everyday world appear subtly transformed, creating scenes that feel both recognisable and quietly surreal. Garden’s paintings are notable for their richly worked surfaces, built through layers of dense paint that give the image a pronounced physical presence. In many works the material quality of the paint becomes an essential part of the composition itself.
Garden is known for experimenting with his own paint mixtures, combining oil with natural materials such as sand or salt to produce nuanced colours and tactile surfaces. This approach allows him to achieve the complex textures and tonal variations that characterise his work.
Over the course of a career spanning several decades, Garden has exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom. His paintings have been shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and at the Royal West of England Academy, where he was elected an Academician in 2002. His work is held in numerous private collections internationally, including in the United States, the Netherlands, Australia and Japan, reflecting the broad appeal of his imaginative and highly individual approach to painting.
