Executed in 2004, Black Grapes sits firmly within Willem Dolphyn’s mature period. By this point, Dolphyn had spent decades refining a contemporary continuation of the Northern European still-life tradition, favouring modest domestic vessels and seasonal fruit over overt symbolism. The pale ceramic jug, pressed glass goblet and shallow metal bowl are arranged with deliberate spacing, whilst the black grapes introduce the deepest tonal notes.
