Sally Gaywood’s Dartmoor Ponies is a characteristic example of the British landscape painter’s enduring fascination with Dartmoor, its open moorland and rapidly changing weather. A small group of ponies moves across the distant landscape beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky, where cool greys and blues are illuminated by passages of warm golden light. Dartmoor Ponies reflects Gaywood’s particular sensitivity to atmosphere, using light and weather to convey the mood of the landscape rather than simply recording its appearance. Dartmoor became an important subject within Gaywood’s wider oeuvre after she settled in Devon, providing continued inspiration through its dramatic skies, isolated terrain and shifting conditions.3of 3
