Connemara panoramas, mountains and Irish artistic inspiration

Holiday season brings with it all the joy of long sunny days, sea and sand. For us last week it also bought a couple of “grand soft days” as we ventured off to the rainy far west coast of Ireland. We were on a visit to see Kenneth Webb and his family, who take up residence in County Connemara at this, and other times, of the year.

Kenneth has a home and space to paint at the Ballinaboy studio. A small cottage originally, once home to Marconi’s radio men – some of whom left to operate the radios on Titanic, it has been added to and modernised by the Webb’s. Around the cottage is Kenneth’s inspirational garden and outside the garden wall; the atmospheric, ancient peat bog lands and Twelve Bens mountains. This mystical place has captured and held Kenneth’s life in Ireland since he bought the cottage in the early 1970’s.

This was our first chance to see those places which have only existed for us in his paintings. The garden is an exuberant mix of the poppies, lilies and irises so significant throughout his work . The flowers are sheltered around the streams, pools and rocks of the garden. All of these have been brought in, planted and nurtured by Kenneth and Joan, protected by larger trees and shrubs whose branches sway high above this secret oasis holding back the strong, salty Atlantic winds.

Whilst we were there we also spent a delightful day with Susan Webb and her family. A cottage facing Omey Island, reached only by a tidal causeway, is where her holiday home in Claddaghduff can be found. On the beach here at the start of August there will be pony races. A whole arena is set up with entertainment for a great day out, all planned to take place in between low and high tide. One of Susan’s major passions in life are her beloved horses and ponies.

Her paintings express her joy at these animals and you can see why she loves this location on the beach with a grandstand arena of this exciting annual racing event.

It was a delightful few days as were kindly invited to share with the Webb family their holiday retreat. It was very exciting to see first hand this inspiring Irish landscape and how it charges this families creative talent.

You can view a fine selection of Kenneth and Susan’s wonderful paintings which evoke so well the landscape, atmosphere and natural beauty of this wild Atlantic coast.
