Born in 1848 in Vågøya in Norway, Normann studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf from 1869 to 1872, where Gude was professor from 1864-80. From 1883, he was based in Berlin. It was following Normann’s invitation to exhibit his work there that Edvard Munch came to Berlin at the end of 1892, whereafter a close friendship developed between the two artists.
