Description
Paul S. Brown’s Freshly Gathered celebrates the simple beauty of freshly harvested garden produce, reflecting the artist’s enduring fascination with nature and the traditions of classical still-life painting. Born in North Carolina in 1967, Brown developed an appreciation for the natural world during his childhood, an influence that continues to inform his carefully observed compositions. Brown began his artistic training under Classical Realist painter D. Jeffrey Mims before travelling to Florence in 1988, where he studied under Charles Cecil and Daniel Graves. He later helped establish the Florence Academy of Art, teaching there for two years and immersing himself in the techniques of the European Old Masters.
His artistic philosophy, which he describes as 'Slow Art', places particular importance on patience, craftsmanship and working directly from life. Brown prepares his own paints by hand, carefully selecting pigments and oils according to traditional methods. In Freshly Gathered, the humble radish becomes a subject of quiet significance, recalling the botanical studies and kitchen still lifes of seventeenth-century European painting. The work embodies Brown’s belief that beauty can be discovered through attentive observation of even the simplest natural forms.
