Description
Nicolas Moreton's Sea Ripples reflects his fascination with the organic rhythms of the natural world and the expressive possibilities of carved stone. Drawing inspiration from botanical forms, the human figure and natural processes, Moreton creates sculptures that occupy a compelling space between abstraction and representation, exploring themes of growth, movement and transformation. Having studied Fine Art at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, Moreton began his professional career in 1986 and was elected to the Royal Society of Sculptors in 1995. His practice is rooted in the tradition of direct stone carving, favouring an intimate relationship with the material and allowing its natural qualities to inform the finished sculpture.
In Sea Ripples, Portuguese marble is transformed into a continuous, undulating form that recalls the movement of water and the rhythmic patterns created by the sea. The polished and textured surfaces reveal Moreton's sensitivity to the character of stone, while the contrasting Ancaster Weatherbed limestone base grounds the composition in the British carving tradition.
Moreton's work has been exhibited extensively throughout Britain and is represented in public and private collections internationally.
