Description

Shadow captures the power and watchful intensity of one of nature’s most elusive predators. Rendered with remarkable precision, Sam Dolman’s striking portrait focuses entirely on the panther’s gaze. Emerging from a deep, dark background, the animal’s form is revealed through subtle shifts of tone and light, showcasing Dolman’s mastery of atmosphere and observation.

Shadow reflects the foundations of Dolman’s artistic practice. Growing up surrounded by animals, he developed an instinctive understanding of anatomy, movement and character through constant drawing and close observation. That discipline remains central to his work today, allowing him to create paintings that feel both lifelike and deeply evocative. Painted in oil on aluminium, Shadow demonstrates the artist’s characteristic control of tone and edge, using a restrained palette to emphasise form, light and presence rather than colour alone. Sam Dolman’s work is held in private collections internationally and has been recognised by prestigious organisations including the ARC Salon and the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year awards.
