Jean Lafon French, 1886-1973
Description
Jean Keuléyan-Lafon, known professionally as Jean Lafon, was a French landscape and marine painter celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of the Mediterranean coastline. Born in Paris into an artistic family, he was the son of painter François Lafon and grandson of Jacques-Émile Lafon, both of whom were established artists. This artistic heritage informed his career, although he developed a particular affinity for the coastal landscapes of southern France. Working during a period when the French Riviera attracted artists captivated by its extraordinary Mediterranean light, Lafon devoted much of his practice to the picturesque harbours, rocky coves and coastal villages of Provence and the Côte d'Azur. He became particularly recognised for his moonlit seascapes and sunsets, exploring the changing relationship between light, sea and atmosphere. His works were exhibited at the Salon de l'École Française and galleries in Paris and Vichy. Bord de Mer, Méditerranée exemplifies Lafon's enduring fascination with the Mediterranean coast, capturing the restless movement of the sea against its rugged shoreline.
