Description

The Red Head combines Joe Hargan's unmistakable command of colour, atmosphere and psychological narrative. Set within an opulent gallery interior, the composition juxtaposes classical portraiture, contemporary figuration and Hargan’s characteristic sense of theatrical intrigue. A dark-haired female figure dominates the foreground with an intense, enigmatic gaze, while behind her a grand portrait and carefully arranged objects create layers of symbolism and visual tension. Rich golden ochres, deep cobalt blues and luminous flesh tones demonstrate Hargan’s renowned painterly technique. Influences of the Scottish Colourists, European figurative painting and modern expressionism are all subtly woven into the composition, resulting in a work that feels both timeless and distinctly contemporary.
