Description

Celebrated as a “painter of light”, Joseph Raymond Wintz enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest artists working in France in the early twentieth century. Wintz’ skill and complete command of his palette set him aside from his contemporaries. He gained a firm appreciation by critics and collectors as a leading painter of the Brittany coastline and was renowned for his charming window and balcony scenes bathed in sunshine which perfectly embody memories of holidays by the coast.

Painted in 1952, La Côte Rocheuse à l’Île d’Yeu, presents a deeply expressive vision of the rocky coastline of the Île d’Yeu. This mature work diverges significantly from his earlier, more structured harbour scenes, instead embracing a more fluid and dynamic interpretation of the landscape. The jagged cliffs dominate the foreground, rendered in an unexpected palette of rose, violet, and deep green, their textured surfaces capturing the raw, untamed nature of this dramatic coastal terrain. The sea, shimmering in flecks of blue, green, and white, churns between the rocky outcrops, reflecting the restless energy of the Atlantic. In the distance, the misty silhouettes of far-off rock formations loom through the haze, lending the painting a sense of vastness and mystery.
