Overview
Through his sensitive observation of rural life and distinctive technical approach, Claude Honoré Hugrel created a lasting record of the landscapes, traditions and agricultural communities of early twentieth-century Burgundy.
Claude Honoré Hugrel was a French landscape and animal painter whose work offers an evocative record of rural life in Burgundy during the early twentieth century. Born in Mâcon, on the banks of the River Saône, Hugrel developed a profound attachment to the landscapes of his native region, finding inspiration in its rolling vineyards, agricultural communities and tranquil river valleys. His paintings are distinguished by their atmospheric sensitivity, expressive colour and sympathetic portrayal of the people and animals inhabiting the French countryside. Hugrel's artistic education began at the municipal drawing school in Mâcon, before he pursued further studies at the École du Louvre in Paris. He initially trained as a decorative painter under Hippolyte Perrin and subsequently studied with Georges Duhain. His early career encompassed decorative commissions and theatrical scenery, an artistic discipline he continued to practise alongside his landscape painting. Travels to Algeria in 1908, Belgium and northern Italy around 1910 contributed significantly to Hugrel's artistic development. During this period, he began moving away from traditional oil painting towards a distinctive technique combining détrempe, a water-based painting medium, with delicate applications of pastel. This approach became characteristic of his mature work, allowing him to explore the changing effects of light through subtle tonal transitions and richly nuanced colour. Throughout his career, Hugrel remained closely associated with the Mâconnais countryside. His paintings frequently depicted farmers at work, grazing cattle, shepherds and the seasonal rhythms of agricultural life. His understanding of the relationship between humanity and landscape found particular expression in Labour dans le Mâconnais (1922), now in the collection of the Musée des Ursulines in Mâcon.
