Overview
"At the core of my paintings is the search for a precision of focus on the formal properties of objects that have an everyday, almost unremarkable presence in our lives. This results in a familiar and nostalgic content, and for me a more intimate relationship with their representation" - Paul Stone.
In Paul Stone's paintings, the simplest domestic objects become subjects of extraordinary attention. A British still life artist based in South Yorkshire, Stone is recognised for his meticulously composed oil paintings of fruit, ceramics, glass and reflective metal, combining the discipline of classical realism with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone developed his artistic interests through the study of Art History, obtaining a degree from the University of Bolton before completing a Master's in Contemporary Fine Art Practice at Sheffield. He became a full-time painter in 2008, devoting his practice to the exploration of still life, a genre whose long artistic history continues to inform his work. Stone's earliest compositions grew from an appreciation of ordinary, often discarded possessions. His subsequent introduction of fruit and vegetables brought a new organic dimension to his paintings, while retaining his fascination with the quiet significance of everyday things. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of Dutch and Spanish still life painting, Stone approaches composition with exceptional sensitivity to balance, form and space. His restrained backgrounds and carefully directed light lend individual objects an almost theatrical presence. His painting process is equally considered. Preparing his own canvas boards and working through successive layers of oil paint, Stone gradually develops the tonal relationships that give his subjects their convincing physical presence. In 2010, Stone was named Still Life Artist of the Year by Artists & Illustrators magazine. Throughout his career, Stone has remained committed to the possibilities of still life painting, offering a contemporary continuation of a centuries-old tradition, revealing richness in the overlooked details of domestic life.

Ceramic Bowl with NectarinesOil on Canvasboard33 x 33 cms / 13 x 13 inchesSigned 'STONE' (lower right)Description
Paul Stone’s Ceramic Bowl with Nectarines celebrates the simple pleasures of seasonal abundance, transforming a familiar arrangement of summer fruit into a contemplative still life. Raised on the Suffolk coast, Stone studied Art History and Contemporary Fine Art Practice in Sheffield before becoming a full-time painter in 2008. His practice is rooted in an appreciation of everyday objects and their ability to evoke memory, familiarity and a sense of domestic comfort. Drawing inspiration from seventeenth-century Dutch and Spanish still-life painting, alongside the work of British artist William Nicholson, Stone continues a tradition in which modest subjects are elevated through careful observation and considered composition. Fruit has long held a significant place within European still life, frequently associated with the richness of nature, the passing seasons and the fleeting pleasures of everyday life. In Ceramic Bowl with Nectarines, Stone brings this historical tradition into a contemporary domestic setting. His characteristic sensitivity to light and atmosphere lends the arrangement an intimate quality, encouraging the viewer to appreciate the understated beauty of ordinary things.
