Overview
Today, Sally Gaywood is particularly associated with paintings of Dartmoor and the English landscape. Whether depicting sunlight breaking through cloud or quiet farmlands, her paintings demonstrate an enduring fascination with the relationship between landscape, light and weather.
Sally Gaywood is a British landscape painter known for her atmospheric oil paintings of the English countryside and changing patterns of light and weather. Born in Chester, Gaywood demonstrated an aptitude for painting from an early age. Although she initially trained as a dancer, her ambition was always to become an artist, and she later studied under the marine and portrait painter Robert Goodwin at his Chelsea studio in London. Working within the tradition of British landscape painting, Gaywood has developed a distinctive approach centred on atmosphere and the natural environment. Cloud formations and shifting light are particularly important within her work, allowing her to capture not simply the appearance of a landscape but its changing mood. Her subjects encompass rural landscapes, rivers, coastlines and agricultural scenes across Britain, with recorded paintings depicting locations including Suffolk, the River Orwell and the countryside of southern England. Throughout her career, Gaywood has undertaken a number of significant public and private commissions. These include six views of the Royal farms at Windsor, which entered the Royal Collection; a commission for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers relating to the Gulf War; two paintings for the British Horse Society; and a panoramic view of London featuring St Paul's Cathedral for the Central Electricity Generating Board. Gaywood has also held solo exhibitions in London, including an exhibition at the House of Commons, as well as exhibiting internationally. Her paintings have subsequently entered private collections around the world. After living for a period in Hampshire, Gaywood moved to a remote farmhouse in Devon, where the landscape of Dartmoor became an increasingly important source of inspiration.
