Overview
Nicolas has spent four decades working as a professional sculptor, with a particular focus on carving stone.
Nicolas favours materials sourced within the UK, only turning to international stone when necessary. While his techniques are rooted in traditional craftsmanship, his work has evolved to incorporate modern elements, including the use of electric light, giving it a contemporary edge. His sculptures are largely figurative, often exploring themes of fertility and the awe of life itself. Over the years, he has exhibited widely across the UK, leading to his work being collected both nationally and internationally. Nicolas has extensive experience across both private and public sectors, undertaking major touring exhibitions and installing public artworks in locations such as London, Milton Keynes, and Yorkshire. More recently, a retrospective of his work was held in the Cloisters and Chapel of New College, Oxford. His achievements have been recognised with awards including the Brian Mercer Fellowship and, most recently, the People’s Choice Award at the National Sculpture Exhibition. His work is held in collections around the world, and he remains open to new commissions and collaborative opportunities.
Drawing inspiration from both botanical forms and the human body, Nicolas creates sculptures that sit between abstraction and representation. Female figures merge seamlessly with floral elements or twist into flowing, organic shapes. There is a playful sensuality to his work that feels both ancient and contemporary. Through forms resembling fruit, growth, and the human figure, he reflects enduring themes of survival, renewal, and sustenance. Nicolas has been dedicated to working in stone for over 35 years, following his fine art degree from Wolverhampton University. In 1995, he was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. His work has been shown in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Discerning Eye, the Royal Academy, and the Chelsea Flower Show. He continues to produce both private and public commissions, with recent work completed in Blackrock, Dublin.
